Abstract

Police agencies worldwide use social media to communicate with the community. Correctional officers in Brazil became a police force in 2019, expanding their role beyond prisons. In Piauí, Instagram is used to share content on prisons and social reintegration. Reels were automatically collected from the @sejus_piaui profile to assess whether their popularity changed after the police status shift and varied by content type. No change following police status was observed; however, reels depicting social reintegration efforts received less engagement, while those focused on facilities or surroundings drew more interaction. The findings reveal high public interest in the prison environment and highlight the need to understand who is consuming this type of content. Low engagement with reintegration efforts suggests social resistance, and sentiment analysis may further test this hypothesis.
