Between cells and corró: na immersive ethnography of the prison universe

It is reported power dynamics, culture, and violence within the Brazilian prison system through immersive ethnography conducted in a police station. The focus centers on interactions between inmates and state agents, analyzing parallel moral codes and the precarious conditions of the environment. The objective is to understand how hierarchies and affects shape prison life, employing the methodology of participant observation (Wacquant, 2002), where the researcher experiences the prison routine, documenting interactions and rituals. Results reveal a duality between violence and solidarity: informal leaders exert control through threats and humor, while symbolic exchanges reconfigure relationships. It concludes that the prison operates as a microcosm of power structures, where informal codes and the economy of punishment perpetuate marginalization as an extension of social inequalities.
